Elmra, the daughter of Lord Walton, governor Of the fortress, is in love with Lord Arthur Talbot, a Cavalier ln the service Of the King. Before the action Of the Opera commences, the hand Of Elvira has been promised to Sir Richard Forth, a Puritan, and Colonel in the Parliamen tary army; oppressed with grief, the maiden supposes her doom is sealed, when, to her grear joy, Str George Walton, (brother to the governor,) brings her word, through his intercession her father had relented, and that Arthur was to be admitted into the fortress, that their nuptials, might be celebrated with due Splendor.
