The writer fully realizes the gigantic task and feels that his is the initiatory history and that in the near future may be succeeded by a much larger and more complete work. Also these attempts have been hampered by limited means and a very limited education and the writer wishes to impress a few thoughts on posterity, that, while the family name and hon or has been sustained mainly by force of char acter and natural ability to discern the [vital elements of integrity and success, a time has now arrived when character and natural ability must be augmented by thorough training and that while ignorance in an old person is a sad misfortune aud should never be made the oh ject of sport and ridicule, ignorance in a young person is disgrace and crime and should brand such person as wanting in the most vital essen tial for patriotic citizenship. We are respon able not only for the proper use of the knowl edge which we possess but also for what we have had Opportunity to acquire.
