Description

Excerpt from History of Prostitution, Vol. 1: Among All the Peoples of the World, From the Most Remote Antiquity to the Present Day

The hour has, therefore, come to write the history of Prostitu tion, at a time when she is tending more and more to elf ace her self from the memory of man as from the customs of nations. The historian deals with times which are no more; he resuscitates dead things; he reanimates the past and causes it to live again, for the instruction of the present and the future; he gives a body and a voice to tradition. The vast and curious subject which we are going to treat, with the aid of erudition and under the censor ship of the severest prudence, this subject - at once delicate and suspect, attaches itself on all sides to the history of religions, of laws, and of manners; though it has been constantly placed in the discard and, as it were, on the index by those historians occupied with ancient and modern manners, laws, and religions. The archeologists alone, such as Meursius, Laurentius, Musonius, etc., have dared to attack the subject, writing on it Latin dissertations, in which the language of J uvenal and Petronius might at its ease braver l''honnéteté both in words and in fact.
