Description

Excerpt from History, Gazetteer, and Directory, of Staffordshire, and the City and County of the City of Lichfield: Comprising, Under a Lucid Arrangement of Subjects, a General Survey of the County of Stafford, and the Diocese of Lichfield and Coventry

For nmrly four thousand years of the world's existence the history of Britain is almost a blank, except so far as it may be read in its geological phenomena; and previous to the invasion of Julius Owr, 55 years before the birth of Christ, scarcely any thing is known of its inhabitants, though two zealous antiqua rians have assi ed dates much earlier than that period to the two Universities 0 Oxford and Cambridge; the birth of the former of which they have carried as far back as the fall of Troy, and that of the latter to the days of Cantabar, 394 years before the Chris tian era! We may no doubt find the prototype ofthese modern anti uaries in the old monkish historians, w o inform us that the ritish Khrane, founded York in the year of the world 2983, and ottin about forty years afterwards. His toriansall agree that e Aboriginesof Briton were a tribeof Gallic Celts, who emigrated from the Continent and settled here.
