Description

On 7 October 1571 the Holy League met the Ottoman fleet in the Gulf of Patras, and within five hours the largest naval engagement of the age was decided. Cervantes was there and lost the use of his left hand; Europe called it deliverance. Cayetano Rosell (1816-1883) gives the battle in detail and then does the harder thing: he weighs what followed. The Ottomans rebuilt their fleet within a year and took Tunis in 1574, so the strategic result was far smaller than the shock — and the argument about how much Lepanto changed has never stopped. With a plan of the engagement and a plate of commemorative medals. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1853 Madrid edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
