As a pictorial biography of Lautrec the illustrations in this book are unique. For over a year the publishers have sought out every available photograph of the artist and they appear together for the first time in these pages. The photo graphs, many of which have not previously been published, are arranged as nearly as possible in chronological order.
Many have been reproduced from badly faded or damaged prints and in some cases, such as the frontispiece, they have been enlarged considerably. The publishers extend their thanks to the many people who have made this material available, and especially to the descendants of the Lautrec family and the Musée toulouse-lautrec. Wherever possible, the source of each picture and the name of the photographer is given in the list of illustrations.
