Description

Head lice are typically spread through direct head-to-head contact, which is why outbreaks often occur in schools, daycare centers, and households. Less commonly, they can spread through shared personal items such as combs, hats, hair accessories, or pillows. Because lice cannot jump or fly, close contact is the primary route of transmission.

The most common symptom of head lice is itching of the scalp, caused by an allergic reaction to lice bites. Other signs may include a tickling sensation in the hair, difficulty sleeping due to nighttime itching, and visible lice or their eggs (nits) attached to hair shafts. Scratching the scalp can sometimes lead to minor skin irritation or secondary bacterial infection.

Diagnosis is usually made by careful examination of the scalp and hair using a fine-toothed comb under good lighting. Live lice or nits located close to the scalp are key indicators of an active infestation. Because dandruff or hair debris can sometimes resemble nits, proper identification is important to avoid unnecessary treatment.

Treatment for head lice typically involves over-the-counter or prescription topical medications designed to kill lice and their eggs. These may include permethrin or pyrethrin-based shampoos. In some cases, a second treatment is needed after 7–10 days to eliminate newly hatched lice. Manual removal using a fine-toothed comb is also an important part of treatment to ensure complete eradication.

Environmental control is an important step in preventing reinfestation. Bedding, clothing, and personal items used by the affected person should be washed in hot water and dried on high heat. Items that cannot be washed can be sealed in plastic bags for several days. Household members and close contacts should be checked and treated if necessary.

Prevention focuses on reducing head-to-head contact and avoiding the sharing of personal items. Teaching children not to share combs, hats, or hair accessories can help reduce spread. Regular scalp checks during outbreaks can also help identify infestations early, allowing for prompt treatment and limiting transmission.

Head lice are a common and manageable condition that can be effectively treated with proper care and attention. While infestations can be stressful for families, they do not pose serious health risks. With accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and preventive measures, individuals can quickly eliminate lice and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
