Description

When Argentina marched south in 1879 it took naturalists along, and Adolfo Doering, a German chemist settled in Cordoba, wrote the geological volume of the official report. The science is serious: stratigraphy, fossils, the structure of the Rio Negro basin, much of it described for the first time. The circumstances were not innocent, and the volume belongs to the history of the Conquest of the Desert as much as to the history of geology — a reminder that the two were, for that generation, the same expedition. Doering's descriptions remain the earliest systematic account of the region's formations.
