Excerpt from Genealogical Memoranda of the Family of Ames
After more than twenty years'' research into family history, I have now brought into book form the results of my labours, shewing not only our paternal descent from the earliest lineal ancestor that can certainly be proved, but also as many maternal descents as I have been able to trace. I have illustrated this family history with portraits, autographs, copies of wills, extracts from old diaries, and other matter, which I hope may make it readable for those who are not interested in mere dry genealogical details.
The earliest paternal ancestor to whom I have been able to trace with certainty is Matthew Ames. (see Pedigree of Ames Family.)
