Description
In *From Pacifist to Pilot*, we explore Alec Waldron's remarkable journey, which began with his sheltered upbringing in the 1930s within the confines of the Exclusive Plymouth Brethren—a strict and secretive religious sect—and culminated in his role as a military glider pilot during World War II.
Alec dared to defy his family's rigid pacifism and enlisted in the armed forces as soon as he was of age. In 1942, he volunteered for the newly formed Glider Pilot Regiment, becoming a member of its inaugural intake.
After training as a military glider pilot, he participated in the ill-fated airborne assault on Sicily (Operation Ladbroke, 1943), where his glider crashed into the sea and he nearly drowned. He also took part in the disastrous Operation Market-Garden (1944), during which the regiment suffered heavy losses. As the highest-ranking survivor, despite his injuries, Sergeant Waldron briefly led the remaining men to safety across the Rhine under enemy fire and in darkness.
He later contributed to the planning of the successful Operation Varsity (1945). In recognition of his invaluable efforts, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Captain, a position he held until his demobilization in 1946.
After the war, Alec dedicated himself to public service as a local councillor, advocating for veterans' rights, particularly regarding social housing. He also enjoyed a successful career in commerce, retiring in 1980 as joint managing director of Addis, a well-known UK brand, after working for many years with the company.
In this engaging account, Alec shares his unique childhood, extraordinary military experiences, and subsequent achievements in civilian life. It is an inspiring story that will resonate with readers from all walks of life.
