Description

Waves—whether they’re crashing on the shores, crackling through the air, or blasting into your eardrums—have played a vital role in John Oliver’s life, as he reveals in this rollicking autobiography.

Here’s the tale of a lad from London’s gritty East End, a West Ham boy with a family legacy tied to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, the birthplace of ‘Big Ben.’ Picture this: an eight-year-old John, smack dab in the middle of the London Blitz, juggling school and the lonely life of a ‘latchkey kid’ as his folks were busy aiding the war effort. Despite bailing on school at fourteen, his voracious reading habit turned him into a library-dwelling auto-didact, outshining many of his peers in writing, spelling, and the dark arts of arithmetic.

Fast forward to his early days in the Merchant Navy, where John starts as a lowly messenger boy in the City of London, with dreams of the high seas once Sea School was in the rearview. Soon, he’s a steward on the RMS Orion, sailing back and forth to Australia, charming well-heeled passengers out of fat tips with a wink and a smile. To keep shipshape, he boxes his way through onboard tournaments, building the grit that would serve him well later. Never one to miss a beat, he also belts out trumpet tunes during ship concerts.

But life on the RMS Orion wasn’t all smooth sailing. Bullies reared their ugly heads, and John had to duke it out for survival, defending the underdogs with his newfound fighting prowess. He bounced around various ships, even spending a couple of rugged years in Australia, trying his hand at tough jobs, like dam construction in Tasmania. Tempting though it was to stay, he returned to the UK to chase his dream of becoming a Radio Electronics Officer, eventually topping his class and working with an eclectic mix of international crews, and learning to fix ship radars in his spare time.

Back in Blighty, with a family in tow, John swapped the salty sea air for the fluorescent lights of ABCtv at Teddington Studios as a ‘sound balancer’ where he worked on various productions which bought him into close contact with many famous actors and celebrities, about whom he has some interesting tales to tell. He later joined Thames TV to work on live outside broadcasts, fitting microphones on everyone from braless young female presenters to royals, all while dodging the Freemasons who seemed to run the show with their secret handshakes. Despite them, he climbed the career ladder and later became a union steward, representing his members' interests.

Away from the TV circus, John’s thirst for adventure saw him taking his family on annual European camping escapades and dinghy sailing with his sons in Middlesex’s reservoirs, leading to yacht holidays around the UK, France, and Greece.

Then an introduction to keelboat racing lit a fire, and soon John was the proud owner of ‘Ephesian,’ a Sigma 33 OOD racing yacht. With his sons as crew, they snagged trophies left and right, including the 1989 Sigma European Championships, no mean feat.

John’s success led to organizing an international Sigma yacht racing event, pitting British clubs against their American counterparts, a role he relished for two decades. The event morphed into a transatlantic tradition, with the British teams taking on Newport, Rhode Island, in a clash of sails and wits with John as organiser.

Upon retiring, John and his wife Beryl embarked on an odyssey of seas and canals, sailing via the stormy Bay of Biscay and the Altantic coast of Portugal to the Med and down the coast of Spain all the way to Sete in Southern France, then meandering back a thousanfnd miles via picturesque French waterways to the Channel port of Le Havre, thence sailing home to Hamble on the Solent.

This book is a treasure chest of tales from a life lived to the fullest, sure to delight sailors, TV industry survivors, and armchair travelers alike, brimming with adventures and memories of the colorful characters met along the way.
