Description
Excerpt from Frances Trollope, Vol. 2 of 2: Her Life and Literary Work From George III., To Victoria
The impression remains on my mind that her powers were, to a considerable degree, weighed down by the great deal she had read about the country and her own consequent expectations. All that she writes is accurate and faithful as to facts; but it is apt to fall into the commonplace and jogtrot (except where she is describing scenery) - a fault that can very rarely be charged on her other writings. It was a wise old woman who advised a fond mother to treat her children with a little wholesome neglect; and perhaps a little wholesome ignorance might be recom mended to travellers in general.
