Description
It was in 1608 that Champlain came again to America. He had, from the king of France, a commission requiring him to explore, and to found a settlement. He spent the long winter at Quebec, learning, adapting himself to the ways of the woods, and making friends with the Algonquin Indians who trooped to the white men''s town partly through idle curiosity, and partly as one makes a pilgrimage to something strange and marvellous.
