Description

Raphael's Transfiguration was unfinished at his death in 1520 and was carried in his funeral procession; by 1800 it was among the most argued-over paintings in Europe, and had recently been taken to Paris by the French. Benito Pardo de Figueroa examines it analytically — composition, grouping, the join between the luminous upper scene and the crowded lower one — and then turns to what was known, and guessed, about the painting of the ancient Greeks. The pairing is deliberate: an age that judged modern art by classical standards needed to say what those standards were. Printed in Paris by Charles Crapelet, this copy comes from the Cicognara collection. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1804 Paris edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
