Description
Eric Harden VC, written by his daughter Julia, tells how 32-year-old Lance Corporal Harden earned his posthumous award trying to rescue wounded comrades of 45 Royal Marine Commando, while under fire at Montforterbeek in The Netherlands on January 23 1945. Julia Harden (Mrs Wells) recounts her father?s life in Northfleet in Kent, where he grew up and became a butcher and a keen member of St John Ambulance Brigade. He volunteered for military service, despite being in a reserved occupation and came through the extremely tough commando training though he was considerably older than many others on his courses. Particularly moving are the letters which Eric Harden wrote to his wife Maud, who died in 2001. Julia was six months old when her father was killed in action and her brother Bob (who died in 2002) was seven. The book also covers the difficulties of the family?s post war life, as well as the privileges accorded to them because of Eric?s VC. Julia Harden has set out to correct errors in many accounts of Eric Harden?s last action, as well as to ensure that he is properly remembered. She will donate any profits from the book to a commando benevolent fund.
