The detailed observations therein presented are the outcome of a careful examination of a large amount of material taken from the operation room and post mortem theatre during the last six years. The investigations have been carried on in the Laboratory of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh.
The author is also able, from an examination of the volumi nous literature which he has collected, to bring to the light some interesting records of workers during the past three centuries, which have for a long time been overlooked.
