Description

Jusepe Martinez (1600-1682) painted in Zaragoza, knew Velazquez, and was made painter to Philip IV. Late in life he wrote down what he had learned, addressing his son: how to prepare a ground, what the Italians did differently, why a painter should study anatomy, and — most valuably — what he had seen and heard in the studios of his own century. The manuscript stayed unpublished until 1866. What sets it apart from the treatises of theorists is that everything in it comes from a man who actually stood at the easel, and who is unguarded precisely because he never expected to be read by strangers.
