Die Schrift ist gerichtet an einen Freund des Verfassers, Fabius Justus, dessen wiederholt an den Verfasser gestellte Frage, aus welchen Ursachen der unverkennbar eingetretene Verfall der Be redsamkeit zu erkl?ren sei, nach cap. 1 die Veranlassung zu der Abfassung des dialogus geworden ist. Fabius Justus war zugleich ein vertrauter Freund des j?ngeren Plinius, wie wir aus dessen Briefen ersehen, und erlebte die Regierung des Trajan.
