Description

Pelayo's victory at Covadonga in 722 was a skirmish that later centuries turned into a founding act, and the cave where the Virgin was said to have aided him became the shrine at the origin of the Asturian and then the Spanish monarchy. Domingo Hevia's memorial sets out what was known and what was believed of the place: the battle, the chapel, the pilgrimages, the endowments, the fire of 1777 and what followed. It is a nineteenth-century sanctuary history — devout, documented where it can be, and unembarrassed about the distance between the two. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1875 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
