It will be known to most of those into whose hands these volumes will pass, that my father was engaged upon them at the time when he was suddenly taken from his labours. He had printed the first volume, and I therefore entered upon the work with the second, the first sheet of which had been once corrected, but not revised. The state of the materials which were left to me will be seen hereafier; but for the execution and correctness of the second volume I must be responsible.
