Description

Johannes Christoph Gundlach arrived in Cuba in 1839 meaning to stay a season and remained until his death in 1896. In that time he described a large share of the island's fauna — birds, insects, molluscs, and the reptiles catalogued here — and gave his collections to the country that had become his. He worked alone, on foot, with the patience of a man who had nowhere else to be. Cuban zoology begins with him, and a great many species still carry gundlachi in their names. This contribution to Cuban herpetology is one of the pillars of that work.
