Description
Spanish archives hold documents in hands that a modern reader simply cannot decipher: visigothic, the various gothic cursives, the processal script whose loops defeated even contemporaries. Antonio Alverá Delgrás (1815-1868) compiled this manual to teach the reading of them, with plates of the scripts, the abbreviations and the numerals as they were actually written. Palaeography is a craft learned by comparison, and a compendium of this kind is the instrument of that comparison — which is why the nineteenth-century manuals remain in use long after their scholarship has been superseded. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1857 Madrid edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
