Accoutumé pendant toute ma vie au travail il m''eût été impossible de vivre sans rien faire et j''aurais fini par céder au chagrin et à l''ennui, si je n''avais cherché à me distraire d''une situation qui ne manquait pas d''amertume. Le _sort m''avait jeté en Allemagne. Si j''avais eu un métier, j''au rais pu l''exercer; mais j''avais passé ma vie à faire des lois et à administrer: ce n''était pas un genre d''industrie qui eût cours à l''étranger. Je me déci dai donc à écrire.
