Description

Coffee Table Book of: Winter Woods is a large-format coffee table book about the forest in winter, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two. Most show the snowy wood itself; others come close to a frosted twig, a shelf of ice or a track in fresh snow.

It opens with snow on the conifers: young spruces so thickly loaded that each has become a lumpy white pillar, and a small frozen pond among snowy crowns seen from straight above.

Then hoarfrost, rime and glaze: birches furred with white frost and lit pink and gold by a low sun, a young spruce in freezing fog with rime built out from its branches in long feathers of ice, and birch twigs sealed in clear, glassy ice.

Then frozen streams and falls: a small waterfall hung with curtains of blue-white ice, a lacy shelf of clear ice over a dark stream, bubbles frozen deep in black ice, and a frozen stream winding in white loops through dark forest far below.

Then tracks in fresh snow: fox tracks crossing smooth snow between spruces, a short line of pointed deer hoofprints, the print of an owl's wings on either side of a small hole, and a heap of spruce cone scales at the foot of a trunk.

Then falling snow: large flakes drifting down through a spruce wood in deep blue light, and a pinewood in a blizzard. Then winter light: long blue shadows across smooth snow, treetops flushed rose-pink above a wood in cold shade, a pillar of golden light rising above the sun, and a clearing under a bright full moon.

Then the night sky: green curtains of the northern lights over a snowy forest, and the faint band of the Milky Way above dark spruces.

Toward the end, the turning winter: golden aspen leaves under fresh snow, a dark stream rushing between banks of melting snow, and a hazel branch hung with long yellow catkins.

Short notes run through the book. They are about the trees, the ice, the animals and the sky rather than about the pictures: where the word hoarfrost comes from, how great grey owls locate voles by listening through the snow, how a crossbill's crossed bill tips lift the scales of a cone to expose the seeds, and which gases give the northern lights their colours.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a hardcover with the art printed on the case.
