Description

Coffee Table Book of: Wildflowers is a large format book of the flowers nobody plants, in the places they choose for themselves.

Its large plates take the meadow apart: a chalk slope holding many species in turf kept short by grazing, poppies on ground that has just been broken, thrift in cushions at a cliff edge, a crack in limestone pavement growing a garden of its own. Between the wide views comes the close work: a bumblebee half inside a foxglove, a crab spider the exact colour of the flower it waits in, the hooked hairs on a stem that stop an insect reaching the nectar.

Short notes run through the book on what is being looked at: why a daisy is hundreds of flowers and not one, why Indian paintbrush grows better beside lupine than alone, why a burr's hooks became a fastening. Enough to reward a second pass, never enough to interrupt the picture.

The book follows a year rather than a season: the same ground thin and green in April, at its densest in July, and standing brown and structural in October, which is when it does most for what lives in it. The pictures run to the edge of the page and the wide frames open across the gutter.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a paperback.
