Description
Coffee Table Book of: Waterfalls is a large-format coffee table book about waterfalls, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two. Most show a fall in wild country, from rainforest to a snowbound valley; others come close to the water, the rock and the ice.
It opens with plunges: a fall dropping from the rim of a curved bowl of sheer cliffs into a deep round pool, and a slender fall streaming off a moorland cliff in a long white plume of spray. Then broad falls and great cataracts: a river pouring over a long, ragged ledge in one white sheet, the deep crescent of a fall bending far back upstream, and a low, wide fall spilling in white threads among small wooded islands.
Then slender falls, fans and threads: water sliding down dark rock in long smooth strands, a fall widening into a white triangle over rust-brown rock, and a sheer film of water down a fern-hung cliff. Then cascades and tiers: falls one below another under snowfields, and a broad river falling in steps into a canyon of banded rock.
Then the rock: a fall over a cliff of dark basalt columns, water spilling over natural terraces of cream stone into small turquoise pools, and a smooth dome of pale grey granite with a dark wet streak where the water runs.
Then canyons and the sea: a fall into a slot canyon of smooth, curving red sandstone, water pouring off a green sea cliff onto wave-washed sand, and a small fall spilling over dark rocks onto a beach of black sand.
Toward the end, the turning year: a fall in full flood between banks of melting snow, maples in red, orange and gold, meltwater pouring from beneath the edge of a glacier, and tea-brown water among purple heather. Then snow and ice: a cliff hung with a sheet of blue-white ice, long icicles beside the falling water, folds of clear ice glowing deep blue, and twigs coated in thick white rime.
Short notes run through the book. They are about waterfalls and the rock, water and light around them rather than about the pictures: how a plunge pool is worn out at the foot of a fall, how black sand can form where hot lava meets the sea, why a rainbow made by moonlight usually looks white, and the sound, too low to hear, that a waterfall gives off.
