Description
Coffee Table Book of: Volleyball is a large-format coffee table book of volleyball, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: the ball and the kit, the net, the indoor court and the quiet gym, play in plain kit, beach courts from dawn to blue hour and nets on grass.
It opens with the ball and the kit: a white ball on a honey-coloured gym floor, a ball of blue and white panels, a worn ball on a dark shelf, an open canvas bag of balls, a ball cart, a hand pump, knee pads, court shoes and a folded jersey and shorts.
Then the net: its knotted square mesh, a padded post, the white band along its top, a net folded away and a referee's stand beside a post.
Then play, the players anonymous in plain kit: a server behind the end line seen from a high gallery, a low receiving stance, a forearm pass, a setting drill in an old gym, the approach to an empty net, a jump silhouetted beside a net at dusk and two teammates passing a ball.
Then the quiet gym: a ball resting beneath the net in late afternoon light, benches beside an empty court, window light on a polished floor, a court far off under warm lamps after dusk, a net seen through an open doorway and a ball on a bench below a rainy window.
Then the beach: a cream and orange ball on dry sand, blue boundary tape pinned to the sand, a whole empty court before the surf, a net at dawn, a net beneath a broad clouded sky and the long shadows of a net in low late sun.
Then the game packed up and carried to grass: a rolled tape and a folded net on a wooden deck, portable posts on short grass, a net in early morning mist, a ball in dewy grass, a grass court under autumn trees and a net on a meadow at sunset.
Toward the end: a net seen along its length, a ball in a pool of light on a deep blue floor, the last player walking out of the hall with a ball under her arm, a court seen from high in an old brick gym, a ball on wet sand after rain and a ball in long strips of evening light.
Short notes run through the book, on the ball and the net, the court and the shore, and the way a rally is played: the serve that sends the first ball of a rally toward the other side, the forearms that form a surface for directing a pass, the jump at the net that briefly lifts a player above the floor, and beach volleyball, commonly played by teams of two.
Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a hardcover with the art printed on the case.
