Description
Coffee Table Book of: The Sport of Ultimate is a large format book of ultimate, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: the flying disc and the open field, the lawns, beaches and meadows where the game is played, the disc and the field being made and cared for, the early days of the game, and a few players seen far off in plain dark clothing.
The kit is laid out plain: a white disc on wet grass and another turned over to hold the rain, a stack of discs in six colours, an orange disc among clover and a pale green one glowing at night, studded shoes clean and caked in mud, thin gloves with tacky palms, a light shirt and a dark one, a mesh bag of discs, a water jug and bottles, cones set out in a zigzag and four more marking out an end zone, a rope ladder, and discs carried out to a beach at sunrise, a frosted lawn, fresh snow, a lakeshore at sunset and an upland pasture under summer clouds.
The making and care follow a heap of plastic pellets, a polished steel mould and a fresh disc with the small mark at its centre, a line strung between two stakes and another painted by a wheeled marker, and lawns watered at dawn, mown in stripes and rolled flat. The past runs from an old tin pie plate on a lawn at dusk and a faded, scratched old disc to a brick school and a college lawn like those where the game first spread, old wooden bleachers, a gate in a hedge, a weathered fence and an old pavilion in the rain.
Short notes run through the book, on the rules and the spirit of the game, the disc and how it is made, and the history of the sport: spin keeps a disc steady in the air; thrown without spin, it wobbles and falls, ultimate was first played by high school students in the late 1960s, the plastic arrives as small pellets, which are melted before they are moulded, and mud is brushed from the studs after a wet game, so the shoes grip next time.
Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a hardcover with the art printed on the case.
