Description

Coffee Table Book of: The Sport of Boxing is a large-format coffee table book of boxing, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: gloves and hand wraps, the heavy bag and the speed bag, the ropes, posts and canvas of the ring, the old gym from first light to night, the old prize ring on turf, and training seen from behind on road, hilltop, river path and roof.

The gym and its gear fill many pages: rolled hand wraps on bare boards, a speed bag under its platform, the laced cuff of a red glove, a bare gym at dawn with one heavy bag, a padded corner post and its ropes, a steep stair to a bright door, a brass bell, a boxer shadowboxing on a hilltop at sunrise, hide thongs coiled on a marble step, padded gloves on a towel and a bucket and sponge outside the red corner.

Then the gym through the seasons: rain on a skylight, a runner by a river in autumn mist, a boxer resting in the corner of a ring, a green door with autumn leaves on its step, a square chalked on bare boards, a window open on a summer afternoon, wraps drying on an old radiator, a bag under one lamp at night, an old barn open on lamplight in a summer meadow, red gloves on the canvas and a bag capped with snow on a lone winter tree.

Then winter and night: running footprints in fresh snow under a street lamp before dawn, tape on the boards for a footwork drill, a speed bag lit by a street lamp, old iron dumbbells, a square of lamps seen from below, a robe alone in a bare dressing room and frost on a gym window with snow beyond.

Toward the end: a canvas bag half filled with rags, skipping on a roof at dusk, a turnbuckle at a corner post, the thumb loop of a wrap, a rope across a bare gym, a broom against the ring after the sweeping, a maize bag on an iron bracket and folded tanned hides.

Short notes run through the book, on the ring and its measures, the glove and its making, the bags, the wraps and the training, and the history of the sport, from the old prize ring to the first rules to require gloves: a speed bag is a small air-filled bag anchored at its top to a level platform, the four ropes usually run 18, 30, 42 and 54 inches above the canvas, each boxer rests for a minute in an assigned corner between rounds, and a glove begins as a few flat pieces cut from leather.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a paperback.
