Description
Coffee Table Book of: Pickleball is a large-format coffee table book of pickleball, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: solid paddles and what they are made of, hard plastic balls full of holes, the low net, the lines and the kitchen, courts from first light to moonlight by the sea, in the desert and in the snow, an old badminton court with its high net, and players seen from behind and above, anonymous in plain clothes.
Then the paddle, the serve and the court by day and night: the edge of a paddle, a court in the desert at sunset, carbon fibre cloth, an underhand serve seen from high behind the baseline, the shadow of a fence in low evening sun, lamps over a court at night, an old paddle sawn from plywood, a game of doubles seen from directly above and cones set out by the net.
Then old courts, practice and gear: an abandoned court with grass in its cracks, the grip wound round a handle, a net above ripe wheat, a dink seen from directly above, cloud shadows on a high moor, new lines across an old tennis court, white court shoes, the long shadow of the net in early sun, a court taped on the floor of an indoor hall and a squeegee spreading a new coat.
Then the end of practice and the turn of the year: balls gathered into a basket, a portable net on its own frame, a rowing boat on a misty riverbank, snow along the top of the net, a court under hard midday sun, a mown path through a meadow, the shadow of a ball pricked with light, four players under lamps at night, winter sun in an old brick hall and a ball in long grass outside the fence.
Short notes run through the book, on the paddle and the ball, the net, the lines and the kitchen, the serve, the dink and the score, and how the game began on a badminton court in a back garden: a paddle may be no more than 17 inches long, at first light the court is still empty, inside a modern paddle is a honeycomb core of small six-sided cells, and a desert court cools as the sun goes down.
Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a hardcover with the art printed on the case.
