Description
Coffee Table Book of: National Parks is a large format book of the American wilderness in black and white, closing in colour, at the size it asks for.
Its large plates move through the parks and the light that changes them: a sandstone arch framing a hundred miles of desert, a waterfall going to smoke against a dark wall, a burned forest ten years on with black trunks over the regrowth, a glacier's terminus where it is freshly broken. Colour is set aside for most of the book: without it the eye reads shape, weather and distance instead.
Short notes run through the book on what is being looked at: why a canyon's far rim lights before its floor, why a wind-shaped pine grows along the seams of the rock it stands on, what a braided river is doing to the gravel it runs over. Enough to reward a second pass, never enough to interrupt the picture.
The pictures run to the edge of the page and the wide frames open across the gutter. A large, quiet volume for a table, a cabin shelf, or a gift to somebody who walks.
Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a paperback.
