Description

Coffee Table Book of: Flag Football is a large format book of flag football, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: the ball and the flag belt, the lawns, beaches and meadows where the game is played, the kit being made and cared for, the old ways of the game, and a few players seen far off in plain dark clothing.

The kit is laid out plain: a brown leather ball with white laces on wet grass, a flag belt with three bright yellow flags, a heap of belts in two colours, studded shoes with one sole turned up, gloves with tacky palms, a whistle beside a single flag, a wristband with a window for plays, a mesh bag of balls, a pump and its needle, a water bottle and towel, a kit bag, a soft foam pylon, a skipping rope, a rope ladder, low hurdles, and orange cones set out in a zigzag, standing on a beach and capped with snow.

The making and care follow four pointed panels of pebbled leather, a ball waiting to be laced shut, a line strung between two stakes and another painted by a wheeled marker, lawns watered at dawn, mown in stripes and rolled flat. The past runs from an old rounded ball laced with a leather thong and a canvas kit bag on a hook to a leather belt with strips of cloth tucked under it, a bucket of lime, a line marking cart in the mist, old wooden bleachers, army barracks beside a parade ground and a quiet street of brick houses.

Short notes run through the book, on the rules and how the game is played, the ball, belt and field and how they are made and cared for, and the history of the sport: the ball is oval with pointed ends, built to fly point first when thrown with a spin, thrown in a spiral, spinning about its long axis, the ball flies straighter and further, flag football is above all a passing game, with quick throws to receivers on the move, and each play begins with a snap, the ball passed back to the quarterback.

Printed in full colour on heavy 150gsm coated paper at 216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches), as a hardcover with the art printed on the case.
