Description
Coffee Table Book of: Equestrian Sport is a large-format coffee table book of horses and riding, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two: saddles, bridles and the farrier's forge, show jumps on grass and sand, the dressage arena, cross-country fences in open country, the stable from dawn to night, and riders seen from behind on hill, lane, wood and shore.
The stable and the tack fill many pages: a bay looking out over a stable door at dawn, an English saddle on a wooden rack, a bridle on a peg, a brick stable block under an orange sky, a chestnut in its bridle, a plain steel bit, a long stable aisle, a great log fence on a summer hillside, the grooming kit, a plaited mane and a velvet riding hat.
Then show jumping: an oxer of two pairs of wings on raked sand, a red and white upright on a dewy field at first light, hoofprints on both sides of a white fence, a fence alone on wet sand in steady rain, an old show ring with a rustic birch fence, a wall painted like brick under towering clouds, two fences far apart at evening, tall polished boots and a low cross-pole fence at sunset.
Then the yard and the field by day and by night: a skewbald drinking at an old stone trough, frost on the whiskers of a grey muzzle, a head collar and rope on an iron hook, a rail fence half covered in snow, a horse led across the yard at dusk, a horseshoe nailed above a door, a tack room by lamplight, dust in the light of a hay barn, a grey under a full moon and a snowy yard beneath one lantern.
Toward the end: riders in a green summer lane, on the shore at low tide and on a narrow path through a bluebell wood, an old stone mounting block beside a five-bar gate, a field gate in an autumn hedge, an old hand-forged shoe on a stone sill, a bay on golden straw in a quiet stable and a full hay net on a wall of pine boards.
Short notes run through the book, on the tack and the forge, the fences of the show ring and the cross-country course, the arena and the stable, and a little history, from the first stirrups to the nailed shoe: the stable wakes at dawn, before the first ride of the day, each horse has its own stable along the aisle, manes are plaited into small neat knots before a show, and summer hay feeds the horses through the winter.
