Description
Coffee Table Book of: Christmas Lights is a large-format coffee table book about the lights of Christmas, printed edge to edge in colour, one picture to a page and the widest carried across two. It runs from snowy streets and the Christmas market to candlelit windows, the tree and the northern lights.
It opens on lit streets and snowy eaves: a cobbled lane strung with fir garlands and small warm lights, an iron street lantern capped with snow, a white church tower with an onion dome above snowy roofs, and cottages beside a frozen pond.
Then the Christmas market: a timber stall shut under fresh snow, a market seen from high above around its lit tree, a wooden Christmas pyramid as tall as a house, and a stone arcade hung with garlands.
Then gingerbread villages: a house piped with icing dots and swirls, a chapel with a red sugar window, and little houses glowing on a windowsill. Then candlelit windows: a carved candle arch on a deep sill, a single candle in a cottage window, a paper star lamp in a frosted pane, and bare cherry branches in blossom on a winter sill.
Then Advent: a fir wreath of violet and rose-pink candles, a Christingle orange with its candle, and a wreath hung from a beam on red ribbons. Then glass, paper and straw: a red bauble painted with snowflakes, old glass ornaments shaped as fruits and nuts, woven paper hearts, paper stars and a himmeli of golden straw.
Then the tree: a small fir lit with wax candles and hung with apples, gilded walnuts and pretzels, and a branch of old-fashioned coloured bulbs.
Then bridges and harbours: a stone bridge strung with lights over a still canal, and a fishing boat hung with lights in a snowy harbour. Then mountain villages: timber chalets below steep peaks and a white chapel alone on a snowy hillside. Toward the end, the northern lights: green curtains over red cottages by a fjord, and a small red cabin in deep snow.
Short notes run through the book; none is a recipe. They are about the season's lights, markets and customs rather than about the pictures: who could once afford beeswax candles, how long one Polish city has been making gingerbread, where the candle arch comes from, and what a guild's small tree of 1570 was hung with.
