Description
Excerpt from Burgess Genealogy: Memorial of the Family of Thomas and Dorothy Burgess, Who Were Settled at Sandwich, in the Plymouth Colony in 1637
Few, except the immediate kindred, can be expected to feel much interest inthe lineage of a particular family. Curiosity can hardly be excited in the stranger, and the love of general knowledge does not find itself repaid. The genealogist must live on dry roots, prosecute his work with little sympathy from others, and deny himself the hope of any pecuniary reward.
The current of time, how swiftly it ?ows from the eternity past to the eternity future. This ocean-stream bears along on its bosom the generations of men, who like drift-wood are thrown aside by the force of the current on either bank. The lessons of wisdom, which may be derived from the study of genealogy, are not few.
