Description

This is a collection of 50 social comment cartoons about banking and finance, created between 2017 and 2020. The idea arose, from a developing interest in the topic of current affairs, regarding the economic quagmire, in the period that followed the Financial Crash of 2008. An event that Central Banks described, its preceding warnings, as: a ‘housing bubble’, a ‘credit crunch’ and a ‘double-dip recession’ in a farcical attempt not to have to admit the inevitable. Which, not only resulted in the tragedy of business closures, loss of savings, a mass wealth transfer to the top and a race to the bottom on workers “unalienable” rights. But brought with it too, the public scorn, thus confirming the sheer incompetence of the BoE (Bank of England) and the Financial Markets, with egg on their face. In other words, it was not, that it was “incompetence” but rather, it had been ”too efficient”, in creating the illusion that Western economies were strong at the hands of “men of wisdom”, when in truth, the economy was only as strong as, the reckless scaffold propping it, behind the so called “meritocracy” front. This, provided good reason for endless satire, shaming the very system that thought itself, smart, robust, powerful and self elevated to a “God” like status. This collection is a criticism of these themes, using satire to point out the absurd and nonsensical policies, in the system: as usurious and greedy, as those who impose it from their ivory towers.
