Description

Excerpt from Bishop Grundtvig and the People’s High School in Denmark

He had a high idea of teaching as a profession. Teaching, he says, ought to be such that to a large extent it springs from the life of the individual and must be proved in his life but the mental condition which constitutes the life, the outlook upon the experiences of life, the tone in which one expresses those experiences, must be carried into life from youth upwards, and this is one of the chief grounds for a Peeple''s High School. Here we have the keynote of the whole system. Education an adjustment to the spiritual possessions of the race, as Professor Butler has put it in his interesting lectures to the students of Columbia University; an adjustment which takes into account the child''s scientific inheritance, his literary inheritance, his aesthetic inheritance, his institutional inheritance, and his religious inheritance In these words of the American professor we may find a description of Grundtvig''s educational programme. His own pupils were wont to sum up his teaching in these brief sentences: Spirit 18 might; spirit reveals itself in speech; spirit only works in freedom (special Reports on Educational Subjects).
