Description

Kenya is a remarkable country boasting a snow peaked mountain, sandy deserts, a tropical coastline and an astounding collection of wild animals attracting many visitors to its shores. But what of the inhabitants of this country? Most visitors seek resorts upholding our standards of living and are far from the realities of life in a third-world country for whom life for the majority of people is a struggle to survive above the poverty line. Roger Stoakley has lived with several tribes inhabiting the more remote parts of the country and has experienced these hardships.

Bantu Boy is the story of Winstone Wamalwa, bereft of his mother and father, who is left in the hands of unloving grandparents. A lonely child, he breaks out of loneliness only when he is old enough to attend school. His close friend collapses through malnutrition and Winstone becomes responsible for rescuing him. Coming from a rural backwater with no electricity or running water, no shoes to wear and a primary school which has only a mud floor and no glass in the windows, he wins a place at a prestigious school in Nairobi but is badly bullied not only as a result tribal rivalry but also because he comes from a poor background. Later he is expelled from school for lack of school fees, but through his determination he eventually gains a place at university. His triumph over adversity leads him to a place where regardless of the colour of skin, culture or living standards, he feels loved, happy and secure, the essentials all human beings long for. The many hardships he endures will resonate and inspire the teenagers and young adults for whom this novel is written.
