Description
The Autobiography was commenced in October, 1804, and was resumed after a brief interval in February, 1805. It is worked up, in the more important parts, from journals or memoranda made at the time of the events recorded. There are, or were, three copies of this memoir: a foul copy,'' a copy written out clean in thirteen books, examined and revised by the Duke, and a copy of this last, made for the use of the late Lord Carlingford, who at one time had contemplated an edition of the Autobiography. Of the foul copy some books have been lost. This is unfortunate, for these contained notes indicating in one or two places the points at which the Duke began and ended the use of contemporary memoranda. The third copy, however, contains some notes by Lord Carlingford referring to these lost portions, and supplying to some extent the information which they contained.
The third Duke of Grafton was descended in the third generation from Henry F itz-roy, the son of Charles II, by Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland. This Henry, the first Duke, was a man of courage and ability beyond the other sons of Charles II. He served with credit, first in the navy and then in the army, and was killed at the siege of Cork in 1690. He was married, at the age of nine, to Isabella Bennett, daughter and heiress of the Earl of Arlington, who was then five years of age. Charles, the second Duke, born in 1683, was the only child of this marriage. He was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1721 to 1724, and held the office of Lord Chamberlain for the thirty years before his death in 17 57. He was a great favourite with George II 1. He married, in 1713, Lady Henrietta Somerset, daughter of the Marquis of Worcester, and by her had five sons, all of whom died in his lifetime, and all but one childless. The third son, Lord Angustus F itz-roy, was a naval officer of some promise, who died of fever, at Jamaica, in 1741. By his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Colonel Cosby, he left two sons, Augustus Henry, the third Duke, and Charles, afterwards Lord Southampton.
