Description

Fernan Caballero was the pen name of Cecilia Bohl de Faber (1796-1877), daughter of a German Hispanist, born in Switzerland, raised between Hamburg and Andalusia, and the writer who taught the Spanish novel to look at its own villages. La Gaviota broke the ground in 1849; what followed made costumbrismo into a literature. She kept the male pseudonym all her life. This German selection, published in 1861, is how much of Europe first read her — fitting, for a writer who belonged to two countries and wrote in the language of the one she chose.
