Description
Antonio del Rincon (d. 1601) was born in Texcoco of Nahua descent, entered the Society of Jesus, and wrote the first grammar of Nahuatl composed by a native speaker. It appeared in 1595 and became the foundation of everything written since on the structure of the language. This is the edition Antonio Penafiel brought out in 1885, when Mexico was rediscovering its pre-Hispanic past as a national inheritance rather than an obstacle. Two moments meet in the volume: a Jesuit describing his own tongue with Latin tools, and a nineteenth-century republic deciding that this mattered.
