Description
Antonio Cánovas del Castillo (1828-1897) was a historian before he was a politician, and he remained one while serving six times as prime minister and building the Restoration settlement that carried Spain from 1875 to his assassination in 1897. These notes toward a history of Morocco belong to the historian. Spain's dealings with its southern neighbour ran through campaigns, garrisons and treaties, and the country's picture of Morocco was formed largely in wartime; a Spanish writer setting out to give it a history instead is doing something less common than it sounds. What the book preserves is not only what was known of the Moroccan past in the nineteenth century, but the terms in which a leading Spaniard of the day thought that past ought to be told. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1913 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
