Description

Hermilio Valdizán (1885-1929) was a psychiatrist who became the historian of Peruvian medicine, and this book is the informal side of that work: the stories, the disputes, the quacks and the epidemics, gathered because they carry what the official record leaves out. Anecdote is a legitimate historical source when the institutions are young and the archives thin, and Valdizán knew exactly what he was doing with it — he was assembling, one story at a time, the memory of a profession that had not yet written its own. Illustrated by Jorge Vinatea Reinoso. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1925 Lima edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
