Description

José Eleuterio González (1813-1888) taught medicine in Monterrey, ran its hospital, and gave away so much of what he earned that the city knew him simply as Gonzalitos. These precepts are addressed to students entering the wards, and they are about the thing that is hardest to put in a textbook: how to observe a patient, what to record, in what order to think. Clinical teaching was then almost entirely oral, so a short printed guide of this kind is a rare direct trace of how a nineteenth-century Mexican teacher actually taught. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1870 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
