While these lessons are not intended to dis pense with the watchful eye and the helpful hand of an instructor, they are designed to fuinish to the student such explicit directions that he shall be able, in most cases, to do the work well if he will follow the directlons exactly. The authors believe that the mechanical skill alone which a course of manual training imparts is only a part, and not even the most valuable part, of the train= ing which the workshop and laboratory can give the power of intelligent reading and of accurate and orderly description is equally important, and so is the power of foreseeing the difficulties that will arise in the course of a given operation and of devising means to evade or overcome them. These powers it is hoped that these lessons may help to impart.
