Description
English translation by Lt.-Colonel A. S. G. Jayakar of the Hayat al-Hayawan of Kamal al-Din ad-Damiri (d. 1405), the great medieval Arabic encyclopaedia of animals, published in London by Luzac & Co. and in Bombay by D. B. Taraporevala Sons & Co. Arranged alphabetically, each article gathers the names of the animal, its natural history, related traditions and anecdotes, legal rulings on its lawfulness, proverbs, medicinal properties and the interpretation of dreams. Volume II, Part I (1908) continues the lexicon, with additions and corrections and an index; no further part of the translation was ever published.
