Arranged alphabetically, each article gathers the names of the animal, its natural history, related traditions and anecdotes, legal rulings on its lawfulness, proverbs, medicinal properties and the interpretation of dreams. Volume I (1906) contains the translator's introduction, the author's preface and the first part of the lexicon, with additions and corrections and an index.

This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the original edition, reproduced from library copies; the historical text is reproduced without modification, only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
