Flying through heavily defended flak-torn skies, the brave airmen of No.622 Squadron Bomber Command bore the brunt of the RAFs bombing campaign through a sustained period of over two years. Operating the Short Stirling and Avro Lancaster heavy bombers, aircrew carried out operations against a formidable enemy. Relentless operations wreaked total havoc on the industrial and military infrastructure of the Third Reich. These operations came at a cost with the chances of surviving a tour of thirty was at best 50/50. The first few operations were the most dangerous with inexperience contributing to the fifty one percent killed on operations.
The chapters describe the dangers of facing a dangerous adversary in the skies above Europe. Evading the enemy when shot down and survival in prisoner of war camps deep inside Germany became commonplace. The stories tell of the courage, despair, fortitude and resilience in the face of danger. These young men came from all parts of the Commonwealth of their own free will, to unite under the banner of freedom and democracy. Air and ground crew that served on the squadron have supplied accounts herein through their memoirs, diaries and letters. Men and women fought and died throughout this dark period in history without a thought for their own mortality. Over thirty years of research have allowed the author to use primary and secondary information from the crews themselves, enabling all squadron aircrew losses to be commemorated.
