Excerpt from A Survey of Fifty Years: An Address Delivered in Connection With the Celebration of the Semi-Centennial of the American Board''s Japan Mission
This was in 1869, only four years after the end of the Civil War, when our country was in the midst of great industrial prosperity and expansion, when the inauguration of Pres. Grant had brought an end to the long and vexatious con?ict between Congress and Pres. Johnson, and the country was full of hope and good cheer. In this very month of July the Atlantic and Pacific were brought together by the completion of the first trans continental railroad, and about the same time the Pacific Mail Company began a monthly service between San Francisco and Japan and China with the three ships, America, China and Japan. (i happened to be in Yokohama and to see the last sailing of the old China, the last of these three, in July, So chinazand Japan had just then been brought far nearer to the United States than ever before, _and the four weeks of an average voyage from San Francisco to Yokohama in those old side-wheelers were very little in comparison with the months which had been needed to reach Japan in previous times.
