Description

Excerpt from 1793 and 1853, in Three Letters, Vol. 4

It is impossible to deny that the last extract gives expression to the opinion of the majority of the people of this country, - or at least to a majority of those who form Opinions upon such matters,-as to the origin of the last war.

It we were discussing the wars of the Heptarchy, the question would not, as Milton has truly oh served, deserve more consideration at our hands than a battle of kites and crows. But the impres sion that exists in the public mind respecting the origin and history of the last French war may affect the question of peace or war for the future - it is already giving a character to our policy towards the government and people of France. There is a prevalent and active belief among us that that war arose from an unprovoked and unjust attack made upon us; that we were desirous of peace, but were forced into hostilities; that in Spite of our pacific intentions, our shores were menaced with a French invasion; and that such having been our fate, in spite of, all our efforts to avoid a rupture, what so natural as to expect a like treatment from the same quarter in future? And, as a rational de duction from these premises, we call for an increase of our national defences.
